Last updated

The Salinas Angels were a minor league baseball team in the California League that operated for five seasons, from 1976 through 1980. Their home games were held at Salinas Municipal Stadium.

The club reached the league playoffs in both 1976 and 1977, but lost the championship finals each time. A different manager took charge every year: Del Crandall in 1976, Moose Stubing in 1977, Chuck Cottier in 1978, Chris Cannizzaro in 1979, and Tom Zimmer in 1980. Several future major league All-Stars played for the Angels, including Tom Brunansky, Mark Clear, Dave Engle, Ken Schrom, Dickie Thon, and Mike Witt.

Salinas Spurs

The Salinas Spurs were a California League team that operated from 1982 to 1987 and again from 1989 to 1992. They were affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and had partial working agreements with the San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox. In 1988 the franchise moved to Riverside as the Red Wave, but baseball returned when the Fresno Suns relocated to Salinas in 1989. The 1989 Spurs included seven Japanese players, and in 1992 half the roster consisted of Japanese players under agreements with Japanese professional leagues.

Salinas Packers

Two incarnations of the Salinas Packers existed. The first played from 1954 to 1958, affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Braves, and won the California League title in 1957.

The second incarnation played from 1973 to 1975, affiliated with the California Angels, and played at Municipal Stadium. In 1973, John Balaz was named league MVP. The team was renamed the Salinas Angels in 1976.
