Phantom Project

Phantom Project (Spanish: *Proyecto fantasma*) is a 2022 Chilean fantasy comedy-drama written and directed by Roberto Doveris. It premiered internationally on January 26, 2022, in the Official Selection of the 51st International Film Festival Rotterdam, where it was a contender for the Tiger Award. The story centers on Pablo, a young man who dreams of acting but makes a living as a simulated patient and in unconventional therapy sessions. After a breakup and his roommate’s disappearance, he is left with debts and a ghost, prompting a journey through the Ñuñoa neighborhood where he meets neighbors and friends, and finds his path to stardom more tangled than expected. The cast includes Juan Cano, Ingrid Isensee, Violeta Castillo, Fernanda Toledo, Fernando Castillo, Yasmín Ludueñas, Natalia Grez, Rocío Monasterio, Claudio González Ravanal, Marco Carmona, Conrado Soto, Constanza Fernández, Sofía Oportot, Paloma Larraín, and Tomás Abalo. The film was commercially released in Chilean theaters on May 18, 2023. On Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of 10 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.6/10. Cara-Lynn Branch of Universal Cinema called it “an example of modern queer cinema” made by a queer filmmaker. Diego Brodersen of *Página 12* noted that at its best, it depicts a character at a crossroads where adulthood leaves little room for future possibilities, with a tone that sometimes approaches sitcom territory but retains tenderness.
