Production

Neal Baer served as showrunner and executive producer, writing the episodes "Alternate" and "Authority". George Pattison became director of photography after Geoffrey Erb left; Baer noted the previous season was "too dark" and sought better lighting.

Cast changes and returning characters

Belzer's screen time was dramatically reduced in season nine and continued to decrease in following seasons; Belzer commented he was "a bit mystified" but added "It's like yanking the tonsils out of the gift horse if I complain too much. Diane Neal (ADA Casey Novak) departed near the end of the season, with reports that she was fired. Asked if blindsided, Neal said she had lasted longer than most ADAs in the Law & Order universe and looked forward to the future. Adam Beach fully joined the cast as Detective Chester Lake, having appeared twice previously. Days after Neal's departure was announced, Beach announced his own departure, stating he enjoyed his year on the show and looked forward to new adventures.

Cast

Cynthia Nixon guest starred in the season premiere "Alternate" as Janis Donovan, a woman with multiple personalities; Nixon described the role as "such a juicy part" and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Bronson Pinchot played her psychiatrist and called Meloni and Hargitay "the most welcoming stars of any show I've ever guested on." Robin Williams guest starred in the 200th episode "Authority" as an engineer using extreme methods to teach the public a lesson; he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor. Neal Baer stated that the most famous guest stars, including Nixon and Williams, played roles written with them in mind after their availability was confirmed. Kevin Tighe appeared as a kidnapper and rapist in the episode "Avatar", which was well received by gamers; the detectives used a virtual world similar to Second Life to hunt him. Reporter David Keeps, a friend of Mariska Hargitay, briefly appeared as an unnamed detective after Hargitay arranged for him to be written into the scene. The third episode "Impulsive", the first produced of the season, guest starred Melissa Joan Hart as a teacher and Kyle Gallner as her student in a "he said, she said" rape case.
