Production

The season included the series' 400th episode, though scheduling changes meant that "Motherly Love", directed by Mariska Hargitay and billed as the 400th, aired as the 399th episode. At the end of production, SVU was renewed for a nineteenth season, and it was revealed that Eid had left the show to become showrunner of Chicago P.D. Michael S. Chernuchin, former showrunner of Chicago Justice and a longtime Law & Order franchise writer, was selected as the new showrunner. Recurring star Andy Karl, who played Sergeant Mike Dodds, departed the cast due to his Broadway commitments; his character was killed off in the season finale by corrupt corrections officer Gary Munson.

Cast

Vice President Joe Biden appeared as himself in the September 28 episode "Making a Rapist" to discuss the backlog of rape kits. Henry Thomas and Kelli Williams also appeared in that episode, with Thomas portraying a convicted rapist exonerated after DNA retesting. Anthony Edwards guest starred as Sgt. Patrick Griffin, Benson's first partner out of the Academy, in the episode "Rape Interrupted"; Edwards had previously starred on ER, where Mariska Hargitay guest starred as his love interest. Rapper-actor Wyclef Jean guest starred in "Broken Rhymes" as a music producer whose client is involved in an assault case, with Mitchell Edwards portraying Hype.
