Prior to the renewal, cast members Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay had already renewed their contracts through the fourteenth season.
Cast
Dean Winters returned as Detective Brian Cassidy for the season premiere episodes, alongside guest stars Peter Jacobson, Pippa Black, Ron Rifkin, Brooke Smith, and Laura Benanti. Paget Brewster guest starred as Paula Foster, the Bureau Chief ADA of the Public Integrity Unit, assigned to the case against Captain Cragen. Brewster had previously appeared on SVU in the eighth season episode "Scheherazade." Her character installs an interim commanding officer, Captain Steven Harris, played by Adam Baldwin, while Cragen is suspended. Sue Simmons also guest starred as herself in the premiere episodes. Roger Bart, Anna Chlumsky, and Raúl Esparza guest starred in the episode "Twenty-Five Acts." Chlumsky plays an author who accuses a talk show host of rape, but the squad becomes suspicious when her account matches her book. Kathryn Erbe guest starred in "Acceptable Loss" as her Law & Order: Criminal Intent character, Detective Alexandra Eames, now a lieutenant working for a joint City/Federal Homeland Security Task Force. Warren Leight tweeted Erbe would appear in the fourth episode.

The season faced competition from ABC's Modern Family and Suburgatory, FOX's The X Factor and later American Idol, Supernatural on the CW, and CBS's Criminal Minds. The two-part premiere earned approximately 7.19 million total viewers with a 2.1 in the 18-49 demographic and a 6% share. The 300th episode "Manhattan Vigil" drew about 6.77 million total viewers and a 1.9 in the 18-49 demographic with a 5% share. The episode "Lesson's Learned" saw a sharp decline to a 1.3 in the 18-49 demographic, rebounding to 1.6 with the fall finale "Dreams Deferred." The episode "Presumed Guilty" surged to 7.73 million total viewers and a 2.2 in the 18-49 demo, winning its time slot. "Beautiful Frame" achieved a series high in overall viewership in over a year with 8.42 million total viewers. In Live+7, the season averaged a 2.6/7 in 18-49 and 8.6 million viewers.
