Production

Chernuchin told The Hollywood Reporter that the season would incorporate more ripped-from-the-headlines stories focusing on current events such as the Charlottesville riots. He stated that the show would present both political views without choosing a side, aiming for half the audience to throw their shoes at the television and the other half to cheer. Another episode was based on the Charlie Gard case, an infant in England with a rare genetic disorder causing progressive brain damage and muscle failure. Chernuchin described it as a life-and-death story. Other episodes were described as SVU's answer to 13 Reasons Why and an airplane episode covering turmoil on airplanes. Chernuchin noted that some headlines were big and famous while others were smaller.

Cast

The entire main cast from the previous season returned. Chernuchin told Entertainment Weekly that Stone would be an antagonist and a foil for ADA Barba, but not necessarily taking his job. Stone debuted in the thirteenth episode. In that same episode, Raúl Esparza departed after six seasons, telling Entertainment Weekly it was his decision and that he felt it was time to move on. Philip Winchester then became the permanent ADA, guest starring in Esparza's final episode before joining the main cast in the fourteenth episode. Stephanie March appeared as Alexandra Cabot and Tamara Tunie as Medical Examiner Melinda Warner.
