Production
Production began on May 22, with the first episode, "Girls Disappeared," completed in early June. A second episode was also finished in June, while the third scheduled episode was delayed until after a production hiatus to give the cast and crew rest. Executive producer Warren Leight stated that the season would follow the previous finale, with Detective Nick Amaro assigned to traffic stops in Queens. Raúl Esparza noted that Benson would experience a major life-changing event that would affect her choices.
Cast
Peter Scanavino joined the cast in a recurring capacity as Detective Dominick "Sonny" Carisi Jr., starting with the season premiere "Girls Disappeared." Described as a detective who would shake things up and needed refinement, Scanavino was upgraded to a regular cast member beginning with the fifth episode. He had previously appeared in the season fourteen episode "Monster's Legacy" as a different character. Peter Gallagher joined in a recurring role as Deputy Chief William Dodds, head of all Special Victims Units in New York City. Teri Polo guest-starred in the second episode, "American Disgrace," as Cordelia; she had previously appeared in the season ten episode "Confession." Stacy Keach, Henry Simmons, and Sandy Duncan also guest-starred. Ron Rifkin returned as defense attorney Marvin Exley in the October episode "Producer's Backend," representing a young Hollywood celebrity named Tensley, played by Stevie Lynn Jones. Brian d'Arcy James played the top-level producer who gave Tensley a score, and Dana Wheeler-Nicholson guest-starred as Tensley's mother. For the November crossover "Chicago Crossover," Chicago P.D. actors Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer, and Jason Beghe appeared in a joint case involving a child sex internet ring. Bush, Soffer, Marina Squerciati, Brian Geraghty, and Stella Maeve also participated in the second crossover, "Daydream Believer," where SVU worked with Chicago Intelligence on a rape and murder case connected to an apartment fire from the Chicago Fire episode "We Called Her Jellybean" and pursued a suspect from the Chicago P.D. episode "The Number of Rats."
