Production
Emmy Ann Wooding, a long time assistant at Wolf Films, died in a car accident while the sixth season was being filmed; the episode "Charisma" was dedicated to her memory. Near the end of the season, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit crossed over with Law & Order: Trial by Jury in two episodes: "Night" in SVU and "Day" in TBJ. In the crossover, Casey Novak is beaten unconscious by an Islamic fundamentalist. Diane Neal, who performed her own stunts, stated in an interview that she passed out due to an error in how the scene was acted out. Mariska Hargitay mentioned that night scenes were filmed on Tuesday and Friday nights while finished episodes were airing. Hargitay, a trained rape crisis counselor, provided input to the writing of "Doubt", saying she made Neal take a tour of a rape treatment center. "Doubt" did not reveal the jury's verdict; an NBC online poll showed 60% of viewers favored a "not guilty" verdict. Filming of that episode ran long because a truck would not start, causing a lengthy delay. Sound mixer Bill Daly, with the show since its inception, described the audio equipment used, including Lectrosonics receivers and wireless interruptible foldbacks.
Cast changes and returning characters
All main cast members from the end of the fifth season returned for the sixth. Stephanie March returned as Alexandra Cabot in the sixteenth episode "Ghost". John Schuck played the NYPD's Chief of Detectives in "Outcry", a role that became recurring. Mary Stuart Masterson appeared as Dr. Rebecca Hendrix, a psychiatrist and former cop, in "Weak", "Contagious" and "Identity". Neal Baer stated that the character was introduced while BD Wong was acting in theatre and allowed a conflict between Benson and Stabler. Marlee Matlin reprised her role as Dr. Amy Solwey from the fifth season in the episode "Parts".
