Reader's Guide
Holders named in the films: James Spencer (Jack Davenport) and Roxy Morton (Sophie Cookson) in Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Archie Reid (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in The King's Man. In The King's Man, Conrad Oxford swaps places with the Scottish soldier Archie Reid and gives him the nickname Lancelot as a message to his father; the founders of Kingsman later each take a codename from the King Arthur legend in Conrad's honour.
The Kingsman Agency and Recruitment
At the heart of the narrative is Kingsman, a clandestine independent intelligence agency operating outside government oversight. The story follows Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, the son of Lee Unwin, a probationary agent who sacrificed his life in 1997 to save his superior, Harry Hart. Seventeen years later, Eggsy is recruited by Hart, known within the organization as Galahad, to replace Lancelot, an agent recently killed by the assassin Gazelle during a failed rescue mission.
The recruitment process involves rigorous training under the supervision of Merlin, where candidates face demanding physical and psychological tests. A pivotal moment comes when Eggsy refuses to shoot the puppy he had raised and so fails the final test, while Roxy becomes the new Lancelot. However, it is later revealed that the bullets were blanks, testing character rather than lethality. Ultimately, Eggsy proves his worth by leading a mission against the traitorous agency leader Arthur and stopping billionaire Richmond Valentine's global plot.
