The Energy Orb is a collectible item in Journey, a glowing sphere scattered across the game's vast desert and mountain environments. When collected by the player's robed traveler, it replenishes the length of their scarf—the sole means of propulsion and flight. Unlike currency or inventory items, Orbs have no names or stats; they are purely functional resources tied to progression. Collecting them is essential for reaching higher altitudes and overcoming obstacles, symbolizing the traveler's growing strength and connection to the ancient world.

Lore & Background

Each orb pulses with a soft, rhythmic light, inviting the traveler to absorb its essence. The distribution of orbs across the game's stages mirrors a journey from decay to renewal. In early desert sections, they are often hidden in ruins or buried under sand, requiring exploration. As the traveler moves into snowy mountains and the final ascent, orbs become more frequent and vital, emphasizing the climb's increasing difficulty. The game never explains their origin through dialogue, leaving their meaning open to interpretation as symbols of hope, memory, or the collective soul of the world.

Reader's Guide

Energy Orbs are essential fuel for your scarf, which determines how high you can fly and glide. Without them, you cannot reach elevated areas or cross large gaps. To collect an Orb, simply walk into it; it dissolves into light, extending your scarf by a fixed amount. Manage these carefully—losing scarf length through friction or falling reduces your ability to fly. Orbs are often hidden in ruins, buried in sand, or floating above platforms; exploration is key. In multiplayer co-op, orbs collected by one player benefit both travelers, encouraging cooperation.
