Sha Wujing was originally a Curtain-Lifting General in Heaven. He fell from grace when he broke a valuable jade or crystal vase or goblet during a Heavenly Peach Festival; some sources say he did this in a fit of rage, others say it was an accident. He was punished by the Jade Emperor, who had him struck 800 times with a rod and exiled to earth, where he was reincarnated as a terrible man-eating monster. He lived in the Flowing Sands River. Each day, seven flying swords sent from Heaven would stab him in the chest and then return. He had to live in the river full-time to avoid the punishment. His appearance was grisly: he had a red beard, sometimes blue skin, and was partially bald. He carried a magic wooden staff named Xiangyaobaozhang, created by Lu Ban, which could grow, shrink, lengthen, and shorten at will. He wore a necklace of skulls from nine monks he had devoured. Later, the bodhisattva Guanyin recruited him, converted him to Buddhism, and gave him his Dharma name Sha Wujing. He became Tang Sanzang's third disciple. At the journey's end, Buddha transformed him into an arhat known as the Golden-bodied Arhat.

In Their Own Story

Desert Sand's third album of 2021, New World Disciples, arrived in May. To promote the album, a music video for the track 'He Is Here' accompanied its release, featuring what Mick R. of New Noise Magazine described as a message 'about the nature of work and our relationship to technology'. In February 2022, Hallworth-Cook released the four-hour-long Dream Desert, which was named one of the best albums of 2022 by WKNC-FM. Its YouTube upload was highlighted by Dennis Mikula, owner of record label Geometric Lullaby, for surpassing two million views — a rare milestone for ambient music on the platform. In August 2022, Hallworth-Cook performed in Brooklyn for the third edition of ElectroniCon, a vaporwave music festival organized by musician George Clanton, and was described by Tori-Lynne Davis of Bearded Gentlemen Music as a 'particularly interest[ing]' figure of the event. For his first live performance, Hallworth-Cook reported feeling nervous in anticipation, and said it had not 'sunk in throughout the years of this project that it has a big fanbase.' In a 2022 interview, he hinted at a future collaboration with electronic musician MindSpring Memories, which materialized as the 2023 release Desert Memories. In 2025, Hallworth-Cook performed again in Brooklyn for Flamingofest, a vaporwave festival promoted by labels Utopia District and My Pet Flamingo. That same year, he also released a video album compiling works from 2022 to 2024 on his YouTube channel, under the alias Paradise Mountain. He also took part in three consecutive editions of the Slushwave festival, in 2024, 2025, and 2026.

Sha Wujing is the third disciple of Tang Sanzang. His swimming ability is useful. He carries a small gourd that can turn into a huge one to cross rivers. He is kind-hearted, obedient, and loyal to his master. He serves as a 'straight man' character, likely the most polite and logical among the disciples. Some adaptations portray him as bookish and philosophical. His fighting skills are not as great as those of Sun Wukong or Zhu Bajie, but he is still a great warrior and can use intellect as well as strength. He knows only 18 forms of transformation.
