Dampyr is a 2022 fantasy action horror film directed by Riccardo Chemello. It is an Italian production shot in English, and serves as the first entry in the Bonelli Cinematic Universe (BCU), a shared setting for film and television projects from Bonelli Entertainment, itself a division of Sergio Bonelli Editore. The movie adapts the comic series of the same name, which was co-created by Mauro Boselli and Maurizio Colombo.
The story begins with a woman dying in childbirth after giving birth to a son, aided by three nurses who are actually witches. They use a magical barrier to keep the baby’s father—a knight—from taking the child. In 1992, during the Bosnian War, a military unit led by Commander Emil Kurjak discovers a massacred town. A terrified survivor warns them to summon the Dampyr before being shot by a soldier named Stefan. After vampires attack the unit, two soldiers, Lazar and Dejan, bring the Dampyr to the town. This Dampyr is Harlan Draka, an alcoholic con artist who fakes exorcisms and suffers from recurring nightmares. He denies being a vampire hunter, but Kurjak forces him into the streets as bait. Harlan’s blood proves lethal to the vampires, driving them back.
Stefan rebels against Kurjak, locking him and Harlan in a church with a lone vampire survivor, Tesla Dubcek. Tesla reveals she serves a Master of the Night named Gorka, a powerful vampire who can create others with his bite and withstand sunlight. She explains that Harlan is a true Dampyr—the son of a Master of the Night and a human woman who died in childbirth—and that Gorka wants him dead. Harlan senses Gorka’s presence, and after Gorka captures Harlan’s assistant Yuri, Harlan demands Tesla take him to Gorka. She leads them to a war-torn Sarajevo library, where Gorka telepathically forces her to shoot Harlan. After recovering, Harlan and Kurjak infiltrate Gorka’s hideout. Kurjak is captured after succumbing to hallucinations of his dead son, and Tesla is also taken. A vampiric Stefan tortures them, but Kurjak burns him to death. Harlan confronts Gorka, who turns Yuri into a vampire. Yuri kills himself by touching Harlan’s blood. Hearing a dark knight’s voice urging him to trust his blood, Harlan gains new powers, resists Gorka’s abilities, and strangles him.
