Omar Sy was born on 20 January 1978 in Trappes, France, the fourth of eight children. Both his parents are immigrants from West Africa: his Mauritanian mother worked as a house cleaner, and his Senegalese father worked in an auto parts factory. Sy is of Fulani origin and spoke Pulaar at home. He began his career after high school in 1996 at Radio Nova, where he met his comedy partner Fred Testot. He later co-hosted the comedy series *Service après-vente des émissions* on Canal+ from 2005 to 2011.

The character that defined Omar Sy's Netflix era didn't exist in its final form when the project first took shape. In 2018, when Netflix ordered a Gaumont-produced series about Arsène Lupin starring Sy, the initial plan was for him to portray the classic gentleman thief directly. That changed when George Kay joined as showrunner and lead writer. Kay proposed a fundamentally different approach: Sy would instead play Assane Diop, the son of a Senegalese chauffeur, who discovers Maurice Leblanc's books as a teenager and decides to model his own heists on the fictional master thief.
