Borsuri Tur Dal
White pigeon pea variety from Borsuri, Maharashtra.
Borsuri Tur Dal is a white-colored local variety of pigeon pea grown in Maharashtra, named after Borsuri village in Nilanga taluka, Latur district. Locally called Pandhari Tur, it is a major crop in the region. The fertile medium black soil of the Terna and Manjara river basins, with the Terna flowing about 65 kilometers through Nilanga, supports high yields. Known for its distinct nutritional profile, this dal is especially sought after in Delhi and Mumbai. A spicy Marathwada lentil stew called Borsuri Varan or Bhokari Varan is made from a mix of Borsuri tur dal, Masoor dal, and green Moong dal, along with spices.
The crop received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag on 30 March 2024, valid until 6 February 2032. The Borsuri Turdal Utpadak Sangh from Borsuri filed the application in February 2022, and the tag was granted by the Geographical Indication Registry in Chennai. This makes "Borsuri Tur Dal" exclusive to the region, giving it legal protection and a unique identity. It is the second pigeon pea variety from Maharashtra to earn a GI tag, after Navapur Tur Dal, and the 45th type of goods from the state to receive one.
