Setting
The in-game world was set in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant between the films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Players could interact with characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, Yoda, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. More than 20 mini-games were available, including Lightsaber Duel, Republic Defender (a tower defense game), and Speeder Bike Racing. Campaign-based mini-games drew from Seasons 3, 4, and 5 of The Clone Wars. Although based in the Jedi Temple, players could travel to planets like Ryloth, Umbara, and Carlac via the hangar bay. Communication options included world chat (limited by distance), private chat, a buddy list, and an ignore list. Members could create player guilds (squads) with private chat rooms. The environment changed regularly with weekly updates.
Gameplay
Clone Wars Adventures offered a large selection of mini-games spanning strategy, action, puzzle, racing, and combat genres. Mini-games were the primary source of Republic Credits and also provided challenges and goals. There were over 30 mini-games; non-members had partial access while paying members received full access. Many mini-games had trophies for completing difficult feats, and some awarded titles such as Jedi General (Republic Defender), Jedi Ace (Starfighter), Blademaster, Duelist, and Sentinel (Lightsaber Duel). Players could engage in battles with droids, Umbarans, Death Watch troopers, and characters like Darth Maul in two combat zones: Umbara and Carlac. These zones contained quests and missions, explorable on foot or by vehicle. AI enemies dropped Republic Credits and scrap items. The player combat system allowed both members and non-members to use abilities dependent on the equipped weapon, power-ups with companions, and field equipment.
Development
Clone Wars Adventures was developed and published by Sony Online Entertainment, the developers of Free Realms. It was announced at E3 2010 and based on the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Originally conceived as Star Wars's third MMO, it aimed to spark interest in the series beyond the television show. Licensing was worked out with Lucasfilm, granting SOE exclusive rights to the series' sound, artwork (which may have required remodeling for the ForgeLight engine), inclusion of the game's story as Star Wars canon, and early access to episodes. Designers spent considerable time aligning the game with the series' storyline, creating mini-games like Lightsaber Dueling and Starfighter, and expanding on episodes or introducing new storylines. The art style was crafted to match the look and feel of the show. Parts of the game were used for marketing, such as the Ryloth campaign and the gungan lightsaber promoting Hasbro's Join the Jedi campaign. The game ran on SOE's ForgeLight engine, coded in C++. Speeder Bike Racing and Attack Cruiser were developed by Big Bang Entertainment LLC, which had also developed mini-games for Free Realms. Lucasfilm assisted with audio production, publishing, and management.
Reception
Critics were split on Clone Wars Adventures. Metacritic calculated a 65 out of 100 from four reviews. GameZebo gave it 3.5 out of 5, applauding the wide selection of mini-games and how well it captured the series' visual style, but noting that much of the content required payment. Avault scored it 4 out of 5, arguing that even non-Star Wars fans should try this free browser game.
