Ship AIs
The five AIs that fly the spinship Helix.
In the Hyperion Cantos short story "Orphans of the Helix", the spinship Helix carries five shipboard AIs, apparently formerly of the TechnoCore. Each is patterned after a Japanese literary figure: Saigyo, Lady Murasaki, Ikkyu, Basho and Ryōkan.
Lore & Background
Four of the five decide that a distress signal from a binary star system is worth investigating, and they awaken certain crewmembers. At the end of the story the AIs direct the Helix on its way under Hawking drive; Petyr, son of Aenea and Endymion, communes with them, healing Basho's psychological conflicts. In The Fall of Hyperion the personality of the Keats cybrid Severn is stored in the Consul's starship.
