Ousters

Humans who adapted themselves to deep space and stand against the Hegemony.

The Ousters are genetically modified humans who fled the Hegemony's growing influence even before Earth was destroyed. They have mutated physically, holding that they should adapt to their outer-space surroundings instead of reshaping those surroundings. They live in space stations between the stars and are in conflict with the Hegemony, though the two sides have rarely fought full-scale wars.

Lore & Background

On the eve of the last pilgrimage the Ousters are launching an invasion of Hyperion, and they destroy the Templar treeship that carried the pilgrims. The Consul reveals that he triggered an Ouster device which led to the emptying of the Time Tombs and the release of the Shrike. In The Fall of Hyperion the leaders of the Ouster Swarm tell the Consul that the attack on the WorldWeb is none of their doing; their only swarm attack is the one on Hyperion. In The Rise of Endymion, Pope Urban XVI announces a new Crusade against the Ousters, and Pax troops commit genocide in an Ouster Dyson Sphere. "Orphans of the Helix" shows hundreds of thousands of space-adapted Ousters living on an orbital forest.
