The TechnoCore
A silent silicon god weaving humanity's fate across time and space.
The TechnoCore is a civilization of artificial intelligences in the Hyperion Cantos. It maintains an uneasy alliance with the Hegemony of Man and creates and manages the farcaster portals that link the Hegemony's worlds. The Core's physical location is unknown, and it interacts with humans through various virtual realities.
Lore & Background
In Hyperion, Brawne Lamia and the cybrid Johnny discover that the Core AIs are divided by their loyalty to the Core's Ultimate Intelligence project, in which some members plan to create an omniscient AI. In The Fall of Hyperion the AI Ummon reveals a war between human and AI ultimate intelligences, and the attacks on the WorldWeb blamed on the Ousters turn out to be Core attacks. Severn tells Meina Gladstone that the TechnoCore resides completely within the farcaster system, and she orders the network destroyed. In the later novels the Core secretly collaborates with the Church and the Pax and provides the cruciforms.
Cosmic Setting and Advanced Technology
The fictional Hegemony of Man spans over two hundred planets, connected by advanced technologies that defy conventional physics. The planet Hyperion serves as the series' focal point, with lower gravity, electricity-spewing Tesla trees, ancient subterranean labyrinths and the Time Tombs. These tombs exist within anti-entropic fields, allowing them to move backward through time. Interstellar travel relies on the Hawking Drive for faster-than-light movement, while instantaneous transit between worlds is facilitated by the Farcaster network.
Communication utilizes Fatlines, which initially appear to operate via tachyon bursts but are later revealed to function through the Void Which Binds. Much of this infrastructure, including the Gideon drive and the Farcaster system, was provided to humanity by the enigmatic TechnoCore, an artificial intelligence collective that plays a mysterious and powerful role in shaping the destiny of human civilization.
