Reception
Critical reception for Yū Yū Hakusho has been mixed. Hugo Provost of Hardcore Gaming 101 summarized the game as an interesting failure, citing poor quality character sprites, a low number of animation frames, and zooming during battles that results in an ugly yet striking look between authentic anime and cheap mess. He noted that many attacks lack range and projectiles lack speed. Gonzalo Herrero of Última Generación expressed similar opinions about graphics and gameplay, though he called the animated cutscenes a visual marvel, describing them as little more than manga with music. Next Generation panned the digitized sprites as murky and flat and the moves as run-of-the-mill to boring, urging players to avoid the game. Nicholas Des Barres of GameFan was highly positive, praising the art gallery, graphics, and music, calling it an excellent, well-rounded fighting game. Christophe Delpierre of Player One felt it had undeniable qualities in atmosphere, aesthetic, and gameplay despite limited attacks. Rafael Gonzalez of Micromanía considered it a unique yet attractive approach to the genre. GamesTech commended its cutscenes and visuals. Marcelo Kamikaze of Super GamePower noted simplified attack inputs fit well with gameplay but that sound design belittled the 3DO's power.
