Plot

The story begins in New York City, where Hawk Takezaki and Tony Aldus inform their chief, Jim Hyde, that they have forced the villain Bossman into the DragonZone. The chief advises Hawk to return home, but Hawk refuses and heads to the DragonZone to rescue a girl named Candy. Tony decides to join him.

Gameplay

Riot Zone is a side-scrolling beat 'em up similar to Capcom's 1989 arcade game Final Fight. Players choose between Hawk, a blond-haired vigilante with average stats, or Tony, who is strong but slow and has a break-dancing move. The player moves left to right through levels split into three or more scenes, fighting enemies until a boss confrontation. The screen stops scrolling if the player tries to bypass enemies. Unlike Final Fight, there are no weapons to pick up; only items for points and health appear. Unlike Riot City, Riot Zone lacks multiplayer and uses CD-DA music instead of chiptune.

Development

Riot Zone is a home version of the 1991 arcade title Riot City, originally created by Westone Bit Entertainment and released by Sega. Hudson Soft secured the rights for a TurboGrafx-16 conversion, renaming it and redesigning characters in a fashion akin to their adaptations of the Wonder Boy series for non-Sega platforms. Agenda Co. Ltd. handled the development.
