Felix the Cat (video game)

Felix the Cat battles the Professor to rescue Kitty.

Hudson Soft created a platform game starring the cartoon cat Felix. It launched on the NES in 1992 and on the Game Boy the following year. Though made in Japan, it only saw release in North America and Europe. A compilation of both versions arrived on modern consoles in 2024 from Limited Run Games and Konami.

Gameplay

In this game, players guide Felix the Cat on a mission to stop the evil mad Professor, who has taken his girlfriend Kitty. The Game Boy version mirrors the NES original but has fewer levels and lacks color. Gameplay is straightforward: the A button makes Felix jump, and pressing it repeatedly lets him fly or swim, while the B button launches an attack that changes based on his current magic level. Felix loses a life if he falls past the bottom of a level, runs out of time, or depletes his health. Items found throughout the stages restore health and magic. Enemies include moles, tree trunks, cannons, birds, fish, and eight boss monsters, most of which move back and forth at a steady pace and can be shot. When Felix is hit, his magic power drops by one level; if he is already at the lowest magic level and gets hit again, he loses a life. The adventure spans nine worlds.

Release

Felix the Cat saw release in North America and Europe, while a planned Famicom version for Japan never materialized despite a reported December 1992 launch date from Game Champ. On March 28, 2024, Konami issued a compilation featuring the NES and Game Boy versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. A Windows version received an ESRB rating but was not released. This collection uses Limited Run Games' Carbon Engine for emulation, adding save and rewind functions.
