Fire Breath
Plasma blasts, magnesium fire, gas and lava: the many ways the franchise's dragons breathe fire.
Dragons in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise attack with fire in different ways. In the DreamWorks Dragons series Toothless shoots plasma blasts, Stormfly breathes magnesium-fuelled fire bursts, and Hookfang coats himself in flammable saliva and sets it alight. The twins' Zippleback attacks with both heads: one exhales explosive gas and the other ignites it.

Lore & Background
The Gronckle's fire is a lava blast, and Meatlug once vomits lava when seasick. In the series a newly found dragon can mimic other dragons' fire, such as the Gronckle's lava blast and the Nadder's magnesium fire, and in the first film Hiccup and Toothless defeat the Red Death by setting its mouth ablaze. Not every dragon breathes fire: the Bewilderbeast of the second film breathes ice.
