Niedermayer played three seasons of junior hockey with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), winning two WHL championships and the 1992 Memorial Cup, where he was named most valuable player. He was selected third overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1991 NHL entry draft. After a brief debut in 1991–92, he joined the Devils full-time in 1992–93 and scored his first NHL goal that November. Niedermayer helped the Devils win the Stanley Cup in 1995, 2000, and 2003, and was suspended for ten games in 2000 after swinging his stick at Peter Worrell's head. He also held out twice over contract disputes, playing for the Utah Grizzlies of the IHL during one holdout. In 2005, he moved to the Anaheim Ducks, where he won his fourth Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2007.

Niedermayer's significance lies in his rare achievement of winning all six major North American and international competitions available to players, a feat he shares only with Corey Perry. He is a member of the Triple Gold Club, having won the Stanley Cup, a World Championship (2004), and Olympic gold medals (2002, 2010). He also won the 1991 World Junior Championships and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Individually, he earned the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2003–04 and was named to the NHL Second All-Star team in 1998. His uniform number has been retired by the New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, and Kamloops Blazers. Niedermayer was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013, the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2015, and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also named to the IIHF All-Time Canada Team in 2020.
