The Captain of Detroit

Stephen Gregory Yzerman was born on May 9, 1965, in Cranbrook, British Columbia.^[1][2] Yzerman is currently the interim executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings.^[1] Across his entire NHL playing career, Steve Yzerman was exclusively a member of the Detroit Red Wings for all 22 seasons, and he has been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.^[1][3]

Life and work

At age 21, he was named captain of the Red Wings prior to the 1986–87 season.^[4][5] Yzerman announced his retirement from the NHL on July 3, 2006.^[6][5] He returned to the Red Wings as general manager on April 19, 2019.^[7][5] From 1981 through 1983, Yzerman was a centre for the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League.^[8]

With the fourth overall selection in the 1983 NHL entry draft, the Detroit Red Wings chose Yzerman.^[9][5]
