Life and work
In the 1968–69 season, he broke his own goals record by netting 58.[2] In the 1974–75 season, Hull scored 77 goals to set a new professional mark.[3] He scored his 1,000th combined goal on March 11, 1978, becoming the second player after Gordie Howe to reach that milestone.[4] During fall 1954, Hull played Junior B hockey for the Woodstock Warriors after having played minor hockey in Belleville.[1]
Cesare Maniago was the goaltender against whom Hull scored his 51st goal, prompting a seven-minute standing ovation at Chicago Stadium.[5] Seven times throughout the 1960s, Hull topped the NHL in goal-scoring.[6] Hull earned the Gordie Howe Trophy as the WHA's most valuable player during his debut season with the Jets and again in the 1974–75 campaign.[7]

The same source quotes Hull saying, "It felt wonderful and certainly was a load off my back"[8] A 1998 Chicago Tribune article states that Hull told a Russian newspaper that Nazis were not without merit and that the black population of the United States was growing too fast.[9] In that interview, Hull reportedly said, "I don't give a damn. I'm not running for any political office"[9] The Tribune article also notes that Hull called his exclusion from the 1972 Canada-Soviet series the "biggest disappointment of his life".[9]
