Gheorghe Hagi

The Maradona of the Carpathians

Currently, Gheorghe Hagi manages the Romania national team, having previously been a professional footballer.^[1] During the 1980s and 1990s, Hagi was regarded as one of the world's elite players, operating as an attacking midfielder.^[1]

Life and work

In 1982 he made his Divizia A debut at age 17, and on 6 November he scored his first goal from a 35-meter shot against Steaua București.^[2] Hagi transferred to Steaua București in late 1986 on a one-game loan for the European Super Cup final, but after scoring the only goal he never returned to Sportul Studențesc.^[3][4] In 1992 he was transferred to Brescia for 8 billion lira ($2.4 million) by Mircea Lucescu, joining fellow Romanians at the club.^[5][6] He captained Romania at the 1994 World Cup, scoring a spectacular 35-meter lob against Colombia and being named in the Team of the Tournament.^[7][8]

Hagi retired from professional football in 2001 at age 36, holding a national record of 124 caps and still sharing the record of most goals for Romania with 35.^[9] Hagi started his playing career in 1978 with the youth teams of FC Constanța, where coach Iosif Bükössy was his instructor.^[2]

The same source notes that Hagi's grandfather introduced him to sport by giving him a ball made of horse hair.^[4] Wilson reports that Hagi was almost arrested at age 19 in Sibiu by a policeman who thought he looked like a wanted thief.^[4] The GSP.ro article on his return to the national team recounts that poet Adrian Păunescu convinced Hagi in a live TV show to come back, with over 100 fans gathering outside the station past midnight.^[10] The These Football Times article explains that Giovanni Agnelli offered to build a Fiat factory in Bucharest in exchange for Hagi, but the deal collapsed.^[6]

A FourFourTwo article by Wilson describes Hagi as "the most famous Romanian who has ever lived" and notes he achieved this fame even though he is not ethnically Romanian.^[4] According to a GSP.ro article, Hagi made his debut in UEFA competitions while playing for Sportul Studențesc, before he turned 19.^[11]
