Life and work
In 1998, she appeared in her first American film, Stephen Frears' western The Hi-Lo Country, speaking very little English at the time.[2] Cruz received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 film Volver.[3] She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her performance in Almodóvar's 2021 film Parallel Mothers.[4] Cruz has stated that as a child, while playing with friends, she was conscious of acting, inventing a character and pretending to be that person.[2]
Cruz served as a co-producer and also acted in the 2015 Spanish drama Ma Ma, where she portrayed a mother who receives a breast cancer diagnosis.[5]
What the cited sources add
A 2008 Sydney Morning Herald article notes that Cruz rose to instant stardom in her homeland after Jamón, jamón and found it tough to handle.[6] The same article reports that Cruz told her family at age 13 that she was going to become an actress.[6] A 2010 Interview magazine piece states that Cruz's performance in Volver earned her both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.[2] A 2009 Vanity Fair profile describes Cruz as "poised to become a new member of the tiny firmament of actresses" who became international stars after beginning their careers in a language other than English.[7]
The same profile recounts that Cruz was "widely panned" for her role in Vanilla Sky.[7]
