Pan

The shapeshifting soul of a girl who dared to save the multiverse.

Pan is the dæmon companion of Lyra Belacqua, a sentient external manifestation of her soul that appears in His Dark Materials. In the world of Northern Lights (1995), every human possesses such a twin from birth, but Pan distinguishes himself through his fluid ability to assume any animal form at will. This shapeshifting freedom persists until Lyra reaches puberty, forcing his shape to settle into a permanent creature. More than a mere reflection of her psyche, Pan acts as Lyra's constant confidant and fierce protector. He frequently serves as the voice of reason when danger clouds Lyra's judgment or deception threatens to unravel her resolve, embodying her raw courage and cunning throughout their journey across parallel universes.

Lore & Background

Pan serves as Lyra's conscience and most trusted ally. When Lyra lies or feels fear, Pan reacts physically, sometimes trying to drag her back from danger or nipping at her heels to correct her path. Their bond is so profound that physical separation between them causes excruciating pain; the story highlights this when Lyra finds an abandoned child at Bolvangar who has been cut from his dæmon in a procedure called intercision. This severing, undertaken by the Church-funded Gobblers, threatens the very fabric of their existence. Through the upheavals of war against the Magisterium and the discovery of other worlds, Pan remains the anchor that keeps Lyra grounded. He accompanies her to the Arctic with the Gyptians, joins Iorek Byrnison in fighting for the right to rule Svalbard, and travels through Asriel's opening between worlds to Cittàgazze.

In Their Own Story

In Jordan College, Oxford, Lyra and Pan witness the Master attempt to poison Lord Asriel. Later, after discovering Mrs Coulter leads the Gobblers who kidnapped her friend Roger, Lyra flees to the Gyptians with Pan by her side. The duo recruits Iorek Byrnison, an armoured bear, and aeronaut Lee Scoresby for an expedition to rescue the children near Bolvangar. There, Lyra is captured and reunited with Roger before being rescued by Scoresby, Iorek, the Gyptians, and Serafina Pekkala's flying witch clan. When Pan accompanies Lyra after she falls from a balloon, he joins her in the castle of the usurping bear king, Iofur Raknison. Lyra tricks Iofur into fighting Iorek; as Iorek kills the false king to take his place, Pan remains steadfastly with Lyra. Later, they travel to Svalbard where Asriel severs Roger from his dæmon, killing him, prompting Lyra and Pan to resolve to stop Asriel and discover the source of Dust.

Reader's Guide

Pan possesses no supernatural magic beyond his innate shapeshifting ability, which he uses with tactical precision. He scouts ahead in bird form, slips through narrow crevices as a weasel, or flashes terrifying teeth to intimidate foes. His true power lies in an unbreakable telepathic link with Lyra; he senses her emotional shifts instantly and communicates complex thoughts without spoken words. In The Subtle Knife, Pan accompanies Lyra through Asriel's opening into Cittàgazze where she meets Will Parry.
