Lore & Background
Poirot visits his dentist, Dr Morley, and on leaving retrieves a lost shoe buckle for the former actress Mabelle Sainsbury Seale. Later that day Japp tells him that Morley has been found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, the gun in his hand. Morley's patients that day had included Mabelle, the prominent financier Alistair Blunt and a Greek gentleman, Amberiotis, who is found dead of an overdose of anaesthetic the same day. The police conclude that Morley gave the overdose by accident and shot himself, but Poirot does not accept this.
Reader's Guide
Mabelle disappears, and a body dressed in her clothes is identified by dental records as that of a Mrs Chapman. A US paperback of 1953 retitled the book An Overdose of Death.
