The Underdog
An early Poirot story that gave its name to a collection.
"The Under Dog" is a Hercule Poirot short story by Agatha Christie. It was first published in the United States in Mystery Magazine on 1 April 1926 and in the United Kingdom in The London Magazine in October 1926.
Lore & Background
The story first appeared in book form in 2 New Crime Stories, published by The Reader's Library in September 1929 alongside Blackman's Wood by E. Phillips Oppenheim. It was later collected in The Under Dog and Other Stories (US, 1951), a collection whose stories all feature Hercule Poirot, and in the Collins Crime Club collection The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding (1960).
Reader's Guide
It is the only story of The Under Dog and Other Stories that did not appear again in Poirot's Early Cases (1974). It was adapted for the ITV series Agatha Christie's Poirot, and that adaptation is faithful to the original story.
