In the novel

Seward runs an insane asylum near Count Dracula's English home, Carfax. He interviews patient R. M. Renfield to study life-consuming psychosis, which he terms zoophagy. Seward uses a recording phonograph for his notes and patient interviews; several novel chapters transcribe these recordings. His scientific analysis of Renfield's behavior helps readers understand vampirism. Seward is best friends with Quincey Morris and Arthur Holmwood. All three propose to Lucy Westenra on the same day; she declines Seward, but he remains devoted to her care when she falls ill. He summons his mentor Abraham Van Helsing, who reveals Lucy has been bitten by a vampire. The epilogue notes he is happily married.

In adaptations

Screen adaptations often change Seward's role. He is frequently portrayed as Mina Harker's father or Lucy's father, a change likely originating from the Hamilton Deane–John L. Balderston stage adaptation. Sometimes he appears as a doctor without familial or romantic ties. Examples include Gustav Botz as Dr. Sievers in Nosferatu (1922), Herbert Bunston as Mina's father in Dracula (1931), José Soriano Viosca as Eva's father in the Spanish Drácula (1931), Münir Ceyhan as Dr. Akif in Drakula İstanbul'da (1953), Charles Lloyd-Pack in Dracula (1958), Paul Muller in Count Dracula (1970), Václav Mareš in Hrabe Drakula (1971), Donald Pleasence as Lucy's father in Dracula (1979), Harvey Korman as Mina's father in Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), Dani Lennon as Dr. Joan Seward in Dracula Reborn (2012), Michael Ironside as a coroner in Dracula the Original Living Vampire (2022), and Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers in Nosferatu (2024).

Recent adaptations have returned Seward to his novel role as Lucy's suitor: James Maxwell in Dracula (1968), Mark Burns in Count Dracula (1977), Richard E. Grant in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Matthew Johnson in Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary (2002), Ibrahim Kutty in Dracula (2005), Prasad in Dracula (2008), Tom Burke in Dracula (2006), and Matthew Beard in Dracula (2020). John Seward also appears in the Frank Wildhorn musical Dracula, played by Shonn Wiley on Broadway.

In other media

In the alternate history novel Anno Dracula (1992), Seward becomes Jack the Ripper, targeting vampire prostitutes who remind him of Lucy. His earlier hesitation during a confrontation with Dracula leads to the deaths of Jonathan Harker and Quincey Morris. He is killed after a mental breakdown. In the sequel Dracula the Un-Dead (2009), Seward is a morphine addict obsessed with killing the undead. The 2011 Young Dracula episode 'Therapy' features a female version, Joan Seward, played by Thusitha Jayasundera. Penny Dreadful season 3 includes Dr. Florence Seward, portrayed by Patti LuPone. The animated series You're Not a Monster features Jack Seward voiced by Kelsey Grammer, turned into a vampire. In the manga Hellsing (1997), Seward appears in a flashback of Alucard's defeat.
