Angel Dust

The hotel's first guest: a spider demon, adult-film star, and a soul owned by Valentino.

Anthony "Angel Dust", or simply Angel, is a gay spider demon, adult-film actor and the first guest of the Hazbin Hotel, voiced by Michael Kovach in the 2019 pilot and Blake Roman in the series. His soul is owned by his boss Valentino, a porn producer with whom he shares a toxic, abusive relationship, and his arc is the show's most direct look at the trauma beneath a comic exterior.

Background

Angel comes from an Italian-American criminal family and has a twin sister, Molly, who is in Heaven; his best friend is the one-eyed Australian punk Cherri Bomb. The 2019 webcomic "Dirty Healings" shows how Charlie and Vaggie recruited him as the hotel's first patron. In "Masquerade" the song "Poison" lays out his relationship with Valentino, and a duet with Husk shows his vulnerable side; in "Welcome to Heaven" he tells Valentino he has no control over him outside work. In season two "Scream Rain" reveals that Vox has been hypnotising him since the first season to spy on the hotel; Cherri and Husk rescue him from VoxTek in the finale, but he chooses to return to Valentino out of fear for his friends after nearly strangling Cherri while under the Vees' control.

Reviewers praised Blake Roman's performance, especially "Poison" and the Husk duet, as handling abuse with emotional honesty (The A.V. Club, Inverse, Collider), while The Michigan Daily argued the hypersexual portrayal sometimes undercut the seriousness of the subject. The 2020 fan song "Addict" by Silva Hound, with Kovach as Angel, got an official animated video that passed 150 million views by 2023. The character originated in Medrano's webcomic ZooPhobia.
