They had won the war only to lose their readiness for the biological nightmare awakening in the galactic core.

In Their Own Story

The air on the shield world hung heavy with ozone and the metallic tang of shattered glass. Bornstellar-Makes-Eternal-Lasting stood amidst the ruins of a Promethean citadel, his armor scorched by hard-light plasma. Around him, the crystalline forms of fallen Knights flickered and died, their power cores failing in a silent cascade. He felt no triumph, only the crushing weight of necessity. The conflict erupted from a heated political dispute: the Ecumene Council deemed the Promethean constructs too volatile to exist, while the Ur-Didact secretly allied with them, viewing these warriors as humanity's only insurance against a future threat. This betrayal triggered a galaxy-spanning civil war. Tactics were revolutionary and brutal. Promethean forces exploited advanced teleportation and hard-light weaponry to outmaneuver traditional Forerunner fleets, rendering conventional defensive lines obsolete. Knights and Crawlers phased through fortifications, dismantling armies from the inside out while the Ecumene scrambled to adapt. The Ecumene eventually prevailed through sheer numerical superiority and hastily developed counter-technologies, but the cost was catastrophic. The military was decimated, and the Promethean technology was either destroyed or locked away in secret installations like the Didact's own shield worlds. This internal exhaustion left the civilization critically vulnerable just as the Flood began its first major expansion.
