An atoll is a ring-shaped island made of coral that surrounds a lagoon, often with small coral islands or cays sitting on the rim. These formations are found only in warm tropical or subtropical waters where coral can grow. Of the roughly 440 atolls worldwide, the vast majority are in the Pacific Ocean.

Scientists have proposed two main models to explain how atolls form. Charles Darwin’s subsidence model starts with a volcanic island surrounded by a fringing coral reef. As the volcano slowly sinks and erodes away over geologic time, the reef grows upward to stay at sea level, becoming a barrier reef separated from the island. Eventually, the volcano disappears beneath the ocean, leaving only the ring of coral and small islets, with a lagoon where the volcano once stood. The lagoon is not the old volcanic crater. For the atoll to survive, the coral must keep growing at the same rate as the island sinks or the sea rises.

The alternative antecedent karst model begins with a flat-topped coral reef that forms as an oceanic island—volcanic or not—subsides below sea level. When sea level drops, this flat surface is exposed to air, and rainfall dissolves the limestone into karst. Because the rim dissolves more slowly than the center, the island becomes saucer-shaped with a raised edge. When sea level rises again, coral grows on that raised rim, creating the atoll’s islands, while the flooded center becomes the lagoon.

The word “atoll” comes from the Dhivehi language of the Maldives, where it is *atholhu*. It first appeared in French as *atollon* in 1625, and Charles Darwin later used it in his work on coral reefs to mean a circular group of coral islets, or a lagoon-island. The Dhivehi term likely traces back to an ancient Prakrit word meaning “flat connected crossing between islands,” combining the Sanskrit roots for “together” and “ford.”

About 440 atolls exist globally, mostly in the Pacific—concentrated in places like the Caroline Islands, Marshall Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Kiribati, Tokelau, and Tuvalu—and in the Indian Ocean, including the Chagos Archipelago, Lakshadweep, the Maldives, and parts of Seychelles.
