Matt Average is a nine-year-old boy with a large head, a white T-shirt, a red belt and blue pants. He runs a monster agency with his father, his pet monster Dink, and his neighbor Manson. Despite his youth, Matt is resourceful and smart in monster hunting, and he keeps three tiny monsters as pets. Manson is Matt's neighbor, a stoic girl with a Gothic appearance who loves monsters. She wears a dark green long-sleeved shirt, a brown skirt, and grey combat boots, with long black hair tied into low pigtails and pale skin. A running gag involves Matt's father mistaking her for a boy. Bruce Average is Matt's enthusiastic father and the owner of the Monster Agency. Ellen Average is Matt's mother; she rarely joins missions but occasionally saves the day. Dink is Matt's pet monster who speaks a language only Matt understands and can fire electrical discharges from his horns. The Mini-Monsters are small good monsters kept as pets: Mika is a greenish-brown sludge monster with one eye; Uxi is a light purple creature with a cat-like head and squid lower body; Sid is a small golden dragon with glasses and burgundy wings. The Mayor gives missions to Matt, Manson, Bruce, and Dink. Sheriff is an important city agent. Madame Bovary, a woman with supposed supernatural powers, runs the Company Bovary with her accomplice Appendix, a meek mad scientist with half his cranium replaced by metal. She is a business rival to Matt and his father. Sonia is a Hindi girl and Matt's classmate on whom he has a large crush. Socrates is a bully from Matt's class.
