Characters
Yugo is a 12-year-old Eliatrope who discovers his powers and seeks his true family, having lived with his adoptive father Alibert. He can summon teleportation portals by rotating his hand and later learns other abilities. By the end of season two, he is revealed as the King of the Eliatropes. In season three, he and Ruel search for Adamaï; his actions create Oropo, an evil counterpart. In season four, he meets his sister Nora and mother, the Goddess Eliatrope, and conflicts with the Necros and their leader Toross Mordal. After being captured and aged into an adult, he marries Amalia, becoming King of the Sadida Kingdom. Az is a Tofu bird always at Yugo's side. Queen Amalia Sheran Sharm is voiced by Adeline Chetail in French and by Jessica Bell (seasons 1-2 and OVAs), Christine Marie Cabanos (season 3), and Jackie Rodriguez (season 4) in English.
Production
The series was animated with Adobe Flash, with all production at Ankama's headquarters in Roubaix. Some episodes of the third season were outsourced to Kaibou Productions, Caribara in Montreal, and Waooh! in Liège. The special episodes "Noximilien l'Horloger" and "Ogrest, la Légende" were produced in Japan, directed by Eunyoung Choi with character designs by Masaaki Yuasa, featuring a radically different art style by the team behind Kaiba and Kemonozume.
Netflix streaming
Netflix acquired the rights to the show and began streaming it in September 2014. Ted Sarandos, Netflix's CCO, stated that French animators are among the best and most innovative, and that Netflix expected to strengthen its relationship with Ankama and other French animation studios. The dub for the third season uses an entirely new voice cast based in Los Angeles.
Kickstarter campaigns
On January 20, 2014, Ankama launched a Kickstarter campaign for an English-language dub of the series, with a target of $80,000 Canadian Dollars for the first season. The goal was met the next day, and the stretch goal for the second season was met on January 30, 2014. On June 8, 2020, another campaign for the fourth season raised over €1.5 million from nearly 18,000 donors, setting a European record. On February 12, 2025, a campaign for the fifth season reached its €500,000 target within hours, though Ankama noted that €500,000 covers only one episode and €13 million would be needed for a full season, expecting half from donors.
