Second Foundation Archives

The search ends where the mind begins.

Second Foundation is the third novel of the Foundation Trilogy and the fifth in the in-universe chronology, first published by Gnome Press in 1953. Originally released as two novellas in Astounding Magazine between 1948 and 1950 under the titles "Now You See It..." and "...And Now You Don't," the book focuses on the organization of the same name. While the group's existence was hinted at in Foundation and searched for in Foundation and Empire, this novel marks its essential appearance, though it would not be described in detail until Foundation's Edge. The Foundation series is often regarded as one of Asimov's best works, along with his Robot series.

Lore & Background

The Second Foundation operates as a secret colony of psychologists and mentalics, distinct from the First Foundation's focus on physical sciences. Their structure resembles both an intelligence network and a university, governed by a council of Speakers led by the First Speaker, whose title is a misnomer since they communicate telepathically. The organization's function is to ensure the Seldon Plan proceeds by refining contingencies and guarding against unexpected developments like the Mule. In Forward the Foundation, it is revealed that Wanda Seldon and Stettin Palver were part of this original group. The establishment was deliberately "drowned in silence" to maximize security, eventually revealing its true location as Trantor, the seat of the former Galactic Empire.

Reader's Guide

To understand the Second Foundation's role in the narrative, one must recognize its dual nature as a target and a manipulator. In Part I, the Mule uses hyper-relays to trace his agents across hyperspace, only to be outmaneuvered by the First Speaker who reveals Channis was a pawn with implanted knowledge. In Part II, the Foundation attempts to root out the organization using mind-static devices after detecting manipulation in their society's key figures.

The Second Foundation is not merely hiding but actively shaping events: the Foundation's war with Kalgan and its victory were meant to restore the First Foundation's self-esteem after the Mule, and Anthor and his comrades were martyrs meant to make the Foundation believe it had eliminated the Second Foundation, whose real location is Trantor. The story concludes with Preem Palver confirming the galaxy is secure under their silent guidance.
