Background
Ken Rolston described them as haughty and arrogant sorcerers bent on swallowing up the states around them. They plot constantly against Thay's neighbours: Rashemen, where the Witches of Rashemen stop them; Aglarond, where the Simbul turns them back; and Mulhorand, where the Thayans came from. The 1988 AD&D supplement Dreams of the Red Wizards first explored Thay and its masters, and the 1995 boxed set Spellbound set two adventures against them. They also appear in Lords of Darkness and Unapproachable East, in the adventure "Dead in Thay" in Tales from the Yawning Portal and in Tomb of Annihilation, and in novels such as Red Magic (1991) and The Haunted Lands trilogy about Szass Tam's rise to power.
