SIG Sauer P290

A subcompact DAO handgun with interchangeable grip panels and night sights.

Last updated

The SIG Sauer P290 is a polymer frame subcompact handgun produced from 2011 to 2017 by SIG Sauer of Exeter, New Hampshire. It is chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and features a double-action only trigger. The handgun is not a modular design, coming in one caliber and frame size.

Features

The P290 uses a double-action only trigger that actuates a hammer to fire the cartridge. Its slide is stainless steel treated with Nitron, giving a black appearance, and rides on a stainless steel frame insert within the polymer frame. The grip module has interchangeable panels to adjust thickness and tailor grip size.

Sights are tritium illuminated Siglight Night Sights with two rear dots and one front dot, and an optional proprietary laser sight is available. The handgun comes with one six-round magazine and one eight-round magazine with an extended baseplate; the six-round magazine includes a small finger rest baseplate and a flush-fit baseplate without the finger rest. Units also include a holster and safety loop lock.

Variants

In 2012, the P290 was succeeded by the SIG Sauer P290RS. The key update involved the DAO trigger, which was reworked to give it restrike capability. This means that if a round fails to fire, the shooter can just pull the trigger again. Before this change, a misfire required the shooter to pull back the slide to reset the trigger disconnector before trying another shot.

Other updates included the grip beavertail area, a finger support added to the magazine baseplate, and reshaped controls for the magazine release and slide hold-open lever. The P290RS was also offered in .380 ACP. These pistols often come with one or two magazines, a holster, accessories, and sometimes extra grip panels. The magazines are typically a 6-round version and an 8-round version with an extended finger tab for better control.
