Sinosauropteryx, whose name translates to “Chinese reptilian wing,” is a genus of coelurosaurian theropod that lived during the early Cretaceous in what is now northeastern China. When it was formally described in 1996, it became the first non-avian dinosaur—meaning any dinosaur outside the bird lineage—ever found with direct evidence of feathers. Those feathers were simple, filament-like structures, and in some specimens the preserved color patterns reveal that the animal had a countershaded body and a banded tail. (Note: the reddish brown color once attributed to Sinosauropteryx actually comes from melanosomes in a different genus, Huadanosaurus.) A minority of researchers have argued that the filaments are collagen fibers, but this interpretation has not gained wide acceptance.
This dinosaur was small, with an unusually long tail and short arms. The largest known specimen measures about 1.07 meters (3.51 feet) long and weighed an estimated 0.55 kilograms (1.21 pounds). Initially considered a close relative of the older genus Compsognathus, both were placed in the family Compsognathidae. Later analyses, however, found that family not to be monophyletic, and Sinosauropteryx was moved to its own family, Sinosauropterygidae. Two species have been named. The first, S. prima, is known from three specimens; its species name means “first,” honoring its status as the first feathered non-avian dinosaur discovered. A third specimen once assigned to S. prima is now thought to belong to a tyrannosauroid, not this genus. The second species, S. lingyuanensis, is known from a single specimen and named after its type locality, Lingyuan.
Sinosauropteryx was among the first dinosaurs found in the Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, part of the Jehol Biota. Its well-preserved fossils have shed light on aspects of its biology, including diet and reproduction.

The first fossil of what would become Sinosauropteryx prima was unearthed in August 1996 by Li Yumin, a farmer and part-time fossil hunter who regularly prospected in Liaoning Province. Recognizing the specimen’s unusual quality, he split it into two slabs and sold them to separate Chinese museums: the National Geological Museum in Beijing and the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology.
