Epidexipteryx is a genus of small maniraptoran dinosaurs. Only one fossil specimen is known, and it is kept at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing. This dinosaur provides the oldest evidence yet found of feathers used for display.
The type specimen, catalog number IVPP V 15471, belonged to a subadult. Its species name, *Epidexipteryx hui*, and its Chinese name, Húshì Yàolóng, both honor the paleomammologist Hu Yaoming. A preprint of the description was accidentally posted online in late September 2008, before the paper officially appeared in the October 23, 2008 issue of *Nature*.
The partial skeleton is well preserved. It includes four long tail feathers, each with a central shaft and vanes, but those vanes are not split into individual barbs—they form a single ribbon-like sheet. Simpler body feathers cover the rest of the animal; these are made of parallel barbs, like those of more primitive feathered dinosaurs. Some of these body feathers are unusual because they appear to emerge from a membranous structure at the base, which may represent an intermediate stage in feather evolution.
The skeleton itself measures 25 cm long (44.5 cm including the incomplete tail feathers). The authors estimated its weight at 164 g. Gregory S. Paul later gave a length estimate of 30 cm and a mass of 220 g. That makes *Epidexipteryx* smaller than most other basal avialans.
The skull has several unique features. It resembles the skulls of *Sapeornis*, oviraptorosaurs, and to a lesser degree therizinosauroids. Teeth are only present in the front of the jaws, and the front teeth are unusually long and angled forward—a trait otherwise seen only in *Masiakasaurus* among theropods. The rest of the skeleton is similar to that of the possibly related *Scansoriopteryx*. The hip is unusual: the pubis is shorter than the ischium, and the ischium expands toward its tip. The tail vertebrae near the tip are modified into a structure like the pygostyle that anchors tail feathers in modern birds and some oviraptorosaurs.
The exact evolutionary position of *Epidexipteryx* within Paraves is uncertain. The original description placed it in the family Scansoriopterygidae and as a basal member of Avialae, a result confirmed by Hu et al. in 2009.
