Aurornis is a genus of anchiornithid theropod dinosaur that lived in China during the Jurassic Period. It has only one known species, *Aurornis xui*. This species may be the most primitive avialan dinosaur ever discovered, and it is also among the earliest known members of the bird lineage. The fossil evidence for Aurornis is about 10 million years older than that of *Archaeopteryx lithographica*, which is often called the first bird.

A Pheasant-Sized Glimpse of the Proavis
