Beipiaosaurus was a feathered dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in China, first uncovered in 1996 and officially named in 1999. Before the larger Yutyrannus was found, it ranked among the heaviest dinosaurs with direct feather evidence. It was a small therizinosaur, around 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) long and weighing roughly 27 kilograms (60 pounds). While some feathered dinosaurs have had their colors inferred from melanosome studies, no such analysis has been published for Beipiaosaurus, so its color remains unknown.

Three specimens have been reported. Beipiaosaurus had a shorter neck than most therizinosaurs, which typically have long necks for high browsing. Its feet also differed from later therizinosaurids, sporting a four-toed foot with the first toe reduced but present. Its classification was once hotly debated because its teeth and body resembled those of plant-eating prosauropods, unlike typical theropods. However, as a primitive therizinosauroid, Beipiaosaurus helped confirm that all therizinosauroids are coelurosaurian theropods, not relatives of sauropodomorphs or ornithischians as earlier thought.

In 1996, farmer Li Yinxian found a partial skeleton near Sihetun village. The next year, it was confirmed to come from the lower Yixian Formation and represent a single individual. On May 27, 1999, the discovery was published in *Nature*, and the type species *Beipiaosaurus inexpectus* was named by Xu Xing, Tang Zhilu, and Wang Xiaolin. The genus name means "Beipiao lizard," after the nearby city of Beipiao. The species name *inexpectus* means "unexpected" in Latin, referring to surprising features in the animal.

The holotype, IVPP V11559, came from the Jianshangou Beds of the Yixian Formation in Liaoning Province, dating to the Aptian stage of the Early Cretaceous, about 125 million years ago.
