Sciurumimus

Sciurumimus, meaning "squirrel mimic" due to its tail resembling that of modern tree squirrels (genus *Sciurus*), is an extinct genus of tetanuran theropod dinosaur. It lived during the Late Jurassic in what is now Germany, known from the Torleite Formation. The only known specimen is a juvenile, the type species *Sciurumimus albersdoerferi*, discovered in a limestone quarry near Painten in Lower Bavaria. This fossil preserved traces of feather-like filaments.

The specimen was first mentioned informally by Rauhut and Foth in 2011, then formally described and named by Rauhut et al. in 2012. Initially classified as a basal megalosauroid, later phylogenetic studies have disputed this. As of early 2025, no peer-reviewed analysis has confirmed a placement within Megalosauroidea.

The holotype is exceptionally well-preserved, with a fully articulated skeleton and soft tissue details. It is similar in size and proportions to the juvenile coelurosaur *Juravenator*, but differs in several anatomical features. Its skull is proportionally large—156% of the femur length—and longer than its neck vertebrae. These proportions, along with short forelimbs, unfused bones, and regular tooth shape, suggest it was a very young individual, likely an early post-hatchling.

The fossil shows filamentous plumage at the tail base and elsewhere on the body. The original 2012 description noted these filaments as similar to stage 1 feathers found in some ornithischians, without specifically stating identity with *Dilong* or *Beipiaosaurus*. Skin is also preserved. While most preserved soft tissue likely represents integumentary structures, a small patch of possible muscle tissue appears along the rear edge of the tibia.

When first discovered, one of three phylogenetic analyses placed Sciurumimus as a primitive member of Megalosauroidea, making it the most basal known feathered theropod. The other two analyses—considered less supported by the authors—found it closer to *Monolophosaurus* and Avetheropoda, or in an unresolved position among avetheropods and megalosauroids. Its exact position was hard to determine because the only specimen is a very young juvenile.
