Pedopenna

Pedopenna, whose name means "foot feather," is a genus of small, feathered dinosaur belonging to the maniraptoran group, discovered in China's Daohugou Beds. Its age relative to Archaeopteryx is uncertain because the dating of those beds is disputed, though most researchers place them between the late Middle Jurassic and early Late Jurassic. The species name, *Pedopenna daohugouensis*, comes from the long, pennaceous feathers on its foot bones and the fossil's location at Daohugou. Since only the hind legs have been found, its full length is hard to gauge, but it likely measured one meter or less.
The feet of Pedopenna were similar to those of troodontids and dromaeosaurids, but more primitive. Its second toe had an enlarged claw and was slightly shortened, but not as specialized as the sickle-claws of its deinonychosaur relatives. The scientists who described it, Xu Xing and Zhang Fucheng, argued that the presence of such a primitive member of the avian lineage in the Daohugou Beds, alongside other primitive relatives, supports the idea that Avialae originated in Asia.
Pedopenna is notable for its long, pennaceous feathers on the metatarsus—a feature also seen in some deinonychosaurs like *Microraptor*, but with key differences. Its hind wings were smaller and more rounded, with the longest feathers reaching about 55 millimeters, slightly shorter than the foot bones. Unlike the asymmetrical feathers of some deinonychosaurs and birds—which are typical for flight—Pedopenna's foot feathers were symmetrical. This suggests it represents an early stage in feather evolution, before strong aerodynamic adaptations. The feather impressions are faint but show a central shaft and barbs, and the foot feathers appear more numerous than those of *Microraptor*. There is also evidence of shorter, overlying feathers similar to the coverts of modern birds. Because these feathers were less stiff and showed fewer aerodynamic features than those of *Microraptor*, any flight function would have been weak. Xu and Zhang proposed that the feathers might have been ornamental or even vestigial, possibly representing a reduced hind wing from an ancestor that used it for gliding. This idea gained support from the 2017 discovery of *Serikornis*, another anchiornithid with similar soft, symmetrical feathers.
