Ningyuansaurus

Ningyuansaurus is a genus of pennaraptoran dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation (Aptian stage, 124.6 Ma ago) of Jianchang, western Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China. It contains the single species Ningyuansaurus wangi, known from a fossil specimen originally thought to be the basalmost oviraptorosaur but later classified within Halszkaraptorinae. The genus name derives from Ningyuan, an ancient name for Xingcheng City, and the species name honors Wang Qiuwu, the private owner who donated the specimen for scientific study.

The only known fossil specimen of Ningyuansaurus wangi was discovered in the Yixian Formation and is notable for its large number of teeth compared to more advanced oviraptorosaurs, though the maxillary teeth are reduced relative to most other non-avialan theropods. The skull is poorly preserved but shows at least 14 teeth in the lower jaw and 10 in the upper jaw (four premaxillary, six maxillary), closely packed and lacking serrations. The eyes were relatively large, the skull triangular and longer than in other basal oviraptorosaurs like Caudipteryx, with a straight lower jaw.

The arms were short with longer humeri than ulnae, the legs long with the femur longer than the pelvic bones, and the tail relatively long. Feather impressions were found near the tail tip and along the neck. Numerous small oval structures (10 mm or less in diameter) in the body cavity may represent seeds, suggesting N. wangi was at least partially a seed-eater.
