Juravenator
A small Jurassic theropod with scales and possible feathers.
Juravenator was a small, bipedal predatory dinosaur belonging to the tetanuran theropod group. It lived around 151 to 152 million years ago during the Late Jurassic, in what is now the Franconian Jura region of Germany, within the Torleite Formation. The only known fossil is a juvenile specimen, roughly 75 centimeters (2.46 feet) long.
The holotype specimen, a nearly complete articulated skeleton missing only the tail tip, was discovered in 1998 near Schamhaupten by volunteers Klaus-Dieter and Hans-Joachim Weiß during a paleontological expedition organized by the Jura-Museum Eichstätt. Initial preparation revealed the head, but the hard calcium silicate matrix made further work slow and costly. A CT scan suggested only the neck and part of the rump remained, so preparation was halted. The find was reported in 1999, and by 2001 the German press had nicknamed it "Borsti," after a bristle-haired dog, assuming it had protofeathers. In 2003, museum director Martina Kölbl-Ebert ordered the preparation completed, and preparator Pino Völkl spent 700 hours uncovering the rest of the skeleton, revealing it was almost entire. The type species, *Juravenator starki*, was named and described in 2006 by Ursula Göhlich and Luis Chiappe. The genus name combines "Jura" (from the Jura Mountains) with the Latin *venator* ("hunter"), and the species name honors the Stark family, who owned the quarry.
Diagnostic traits established by Göhlich in 2006 and 2010 include: four premaxillary teeth with serrations on the upper third of the rear edge of the crown; no gap between the premaxillary and maxillary tooth rows; only eight maxillary teeth in the holotype; a long, forward-extending depression (fossa) for the antorbital fenestra; a relatively short humerus; hand claws that are high at the base and suddenly narrow transversely in the middle; and bow-shaped zygapophyses in the middle of the tail.
The fossil preserves patches of soft tissue, including skin from the tail (between the eighth and twenty-second vertebrae) and the lower hind leg. This skin shows mostly normal dinosaur scales, along with traces of what may be simple feathers. Paleontologist Xu Xing, commenting in *Nature*, suggested that the presence of scales on the tail could mean feather cover in early feathered dinosaurs was more variable than in modern birds. The classification of Juravenator has been debated. Initially placed in Compsognathidae, later studies have variously found it to be a basal maniraptoran, a close relative of Ornitholestes, or even a non-coelurosaurian tetanuran possibly related to megalosauroids. This uncertainty reflects broader disagreements about the relationships among early coelurosaurs.
Comparisons of its scleral rings with modern birds and reptiles suggest it may have been nocturnal, though this could be due to its juvenile age. A 2020 study identified small, round structures on the tail scales as integumentary sense organs, similar to those on crocodile scales, which Juravenator may have used to detect movement of aquatic prey. The taphonomy of the specimen indicates it was transported to a lagoon, possibly by a flash flood, and sank within hours of death.
