Lore & Background

The lizard genus Lacerta once included roughly 40 species, but in 2007 it was divided into nine separate genera. Its earliest fossils, from the early Miocene, look identical to modern green lizards like Lacerta viridis. During the ice age, some Mediterranean species, including the notably large Lacerta siculimelitensis, grew to exceptional sizes.
