History

In the first round they lost 3–1 away to 1. FC Kaiserslautern but won 3–0 at Vicarage Road to advance. The second round paired them with Bulgarian side Levski Spartak; a 1–1 home draw was followed by a 3–1 extra-time victory in Sofia. The third round matched Watford with Czechoslovak club AC Sparta Prague. At home Watford trailed 2–0 at half-time, recovered to 2–2 through Wilf Rostron and Jimmy Gilligan, but conceded a late winner to substitute Zdeněk Ščasný. A 4–0 defeat in Prague ended their European campaign with a 7–2 aggregate loss.

Other competitions

Watford returned to European competition in the 1992–93 Anglo-Italian Cup, finishing bottom of their preliminary group after a loss to Bristol City and a draw with Luton Town. The following season they entered again, falling at the preliminary round as Southend United topped the group, though Watford beat Luton. The club did not participate in the Anglo-Italian Cup thereafter; the tournament was discontinued after the 1995–96 edition due to scheduling disagreements between the two leagues.
