History

Burnley were founded in May 1882 and initially played local sides. In January 1885, they invited Scottish clubs Cowlairs, Kilmarnock, and Glasgow Northern to Turf Moor; the match against Cowlairs ended 2–2, marking Burnley's first foreign opposition. After winning the 1914 FA Cup, the club toured continental Europe, playing sides from the German Empire and Austria-Hungary, and recorded their first win on foreign soil against Viktoria Berlin. A charity match in Budapest against Celtic, organised by Ferencváros, ended in a draw, with Celtic winning the replay at Turf Moor.

Burnley toured Italy in 1922, defeating Liverpool in Milan, and visited Germany and the Netherlands in 1927, winning five of six matches. In 1949, they toured Spain and beat Barcelona 1–0 at Camp de Les Corts. A 1951 trip to Turkey saw them defeat Fenerbahçe and draw with Beşiktaş and Galatasaray. In 1954, Burnley travelled to Madagascar and Mauritius, winning all seven matches and scoring 48 goals.

Texaco Cup and Anglo-Scottish Cup

Burnley entered in 1970–71, losing to Heart of Midlothian in the first round despite a 3–1 first-leg win. Their only other participation was in 1973–74. They beat East Fife 7–0 in the first leg, a competition record, and won the return 3–2. An 8–0 aggregate victory over Heart of Midlothian set up a semi-final with Norwich City; after a 2–0 first-leg win, Burnley trailed 2–0 in the second leg but scored three times in the last six minutes to advance.

The final, a single match at Newcastle United's St James' Park, saw Paul Fletcher put Burnley ahead, but Newcastle equalised and won 2–1 after extra time. The Texaco Cup was replaced by the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1975, featuring only English and Scottish clubs. Burnley competed five times between 1976 and 1981, exiting in the group stage four times. In 1978–79, they topped their group after beating Preston North End and Blackpool and drawing with Blackburn Rovers, earning two bonus points for scoring three goals twice.

In the quarter-final, they faced Celtic; Steve Kindon scored the only goal in a 1–0 home win marred by crowd violence, with Celtic fans causing 60 injuries. Burnley won the away leg 2–1, with goals from Ian Brennan and Kindon, to progress 3–1 on aggregate. They defeated Mansfield Town in the semi-final and won the final 4–2 on aggregate against Oldham Athletic.
